Your EV Battery Is Connected, But Is Cyber Security in Battery Management System (BMS) Strong Enough?

Cyber Security in battery management sysytem (BMS)

Quick Read

Cybersecurity in BMS is no longer optional. Battery management systems now connect to the vehicle, diagnostic tools, Bluetooth, cloud platforms, and OTA infrastructure, and every connection is a possible entry point. AIS-156 raises the bar for EV cybersecurity in India. The strongest approach is to build security into the BMS architecture from day one: a hardware root of trust, secure boot, signed updates, authentication and strict access control. Cybersecurity also has to be treated as part of functional safety and managed through the full product lifecycle.

What Is Cybersecurity in BMS and Why Does It Matter?

BMS cybersecurity is the practice of protecting a battery management system from unauthorised access, tampering and malicious commands. The BMS is the brain of the battery pack. It controls charging, thermal limits, cell balancing and protection parameters.

It also used to sit in isolation. That’s no longer true. Today’s BMS platforms talk to the vehicle, diagnostic tools, mobile apps, and cloud services.

Is the battery connected? Yes. Is it secure? That’s the question this blog is about.

The shift is from battery management to battery trust.

The Attack Surface Is Expanding

Every connected interface creates another potential entry point. Bluetooth, CAN, UDS, diagnostic tools, mobile applications, cloud platforms and OTA infrastructure need to be viewed as one security ecosystem. The goal is not to limit connectivity. It is to make sure connectivity never becomes uncontrolled access.

The wider automotive industry has already seen what this looks like. In 2015, researchers remotely took control of a Jeep Cherokee through its infotainment connection, which led to a recall of about 1.4 million vehicles. In 2022, NCC Group demonstrated a Bluetooth Low Energy relay attack that could unlock and start certain Tesla vehicles. Neither case was a BMS attack. Both show how a convenience interface can become a path to critical functions.

InterfaceTypical threatWhy it matters for the BMS
Bluetooth / BLESpoofing, relay attacksA telemetry link must never reach protection controls
CAN busCommand injection, replayForged messages can change charge or discharge behaviour
UDS / diagnosticsUnauthorised access to servicesService tools can expose flashing and parameter writes
Bootloader / debug portsMalicious firmware, key extractionCompromised firmware means a compromised battery
Cloud / OTAUnsigned updates, stolen credentialsOne weakness can reach an entire fleet

Security Starts with the Architecture

Security cannot be bolted on at the end as a compliance step. It has to begin at the architecture stage, across hardware, firmware and communication interfaces.

Hardware. Use security-capable controllers with protected key storage. Keep wireless interfaces properly isolated from safety-critical functions.

Firmware. Build in secure boot, device authentication and signed updates. Add protection against command injection, spoofing and replay attacks.

Wireless access. Follow least privilege. A diagnostic or telemetry interface should never become a route to critical battery controls.

Wired interfaces. CAN, UDS, bootloaders, flashing and debug ports deserve the same attention as Bluetooth.

Cloud and OTA. Device identity, certificates, key management and software integrity become essential.

A robust BMS needs a root of trust, secure boot, authentication, access control and protected keys as its basic building blocks.

Cybersecurity and Functional Safety Are Connected

Functional safety deals with unintended failures. Cybersecurity deals with deliberate compromise. In a BMS, the two converge fast.

A manipulated protection parameter, an unauthorised command or a compromised communication path can turn a cyber incident into a safety event. A battery pack that has had its over-temperature or over-current limits quietly changed is no longer a data problem. It is a thermal risk.

That’s why threat analysis, penetration testing, protocol testing and security validation need to sit alongside functional, electrical, EMC and environmental validation. Security has to be engineered with the same rigour as the functions it protects.

AIS-156 and Global Standards: What Cybersecurity in BMS Must Meet

The latest cybersecurity requirements under AIS-156 are an important step forward for the Indian EV industry. For BMS manufacturers, the message is clear: security must be designed in, not documented at the end.

Globally, the reference points most teams work from are UN R155 for vehicle cybersecurity management and ISO/SAE 21434 for cybersecurity engineering in road vehicles. Aligning BMS development with these frameworks makes it easier to support OEM audits and homologation. Please verify the exact clause references against the current published AIS-156 text before this goes live.

The Indian EV Challenge: Cybersecurity in BMS at Scale

India’s EV market adds a very practical challenge. Security has to work at scale and at the right cost.

A premium passenger vehicle and a high-volume two-wheeler have very different compute, memory, power and cost constraints. The answer is not the most complicated security architecture. It is the right level of protection for the right level of risk.

For Maxwell, this means making cybersecurity in BMS scalable across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles, without turning it into an expensive add-on. India is building connected EV platforms quickly. Security needs to be part of that architecture from the beginning.

Cybersecurity in BMS Does Not End at SOP

Cybersecurity cannot be a one-time certification exercise.

Vehicles stay on the road for years. Vulnerabilities emerge, software changes and diagnostic tools evolve. Security therefore has to continue across the whole lifecycle, from development and manufacturing through vehicle integration, service and OTA updates.

A practical lifecycle checklist:

  • Vulnerability management: monitor, assess and patch known weaknesses
  • Credential management: rotate keys and certificates, revoke compromised ones
  • Secure updates: signed, verified and rollback-protected OTA
  • Controlled access: tightly governed service and diagnostic tools

This Is an Industry Responsibility

Connected vehicle security cannot be solved by one company. OEMs, battery manufacturers, BMS developers, semiconductor companies, connectivity providers, cloud platforms, testing agencies and regulators all have a role.

As part of the ACMA Foundation, Maxwell Energy Systems believes it has a responsibility to contribute to this dialogue and help shape practices that are practical, scalable and relevant to India’s EV ecosystem. The industry has the chance to build security into connected EV platforms now, rather than retrofit it later.

Compliance Is the Baseline, Not the Destination

For Maxwell, the objective is not simply a BMS that passes an assessment. It is a BMS where identity is trusted, software is authenticated, communication is protected, access is controlled and critical commands stay secure.

The connected BMS is no longer just managing energy. It is managing a safety-critical digital system. The next generation must be intelligent, efficient and safe, but also secure by design and resilient across its operating life. Cybersecurity in BMS needs to be engineered from day one, with the same seriousness as functional safety.

FAQs

Q1. Why is BMS cybersecurity important for electric vehicles?

A connected BMS controls safety-critical battery functions, so a compromise can become a safety event, not just a data breach.

Q2. What are the main threats to a battery management system?

The most common are CAN command injection, spoofing, replay attacks, malicious firmware and unauthorised diagnostic access.

Q3. Does AIS-156 cover BMS cybersecurity?

AIS-156 brings cybersecurity requirements into India’s EV framework, and BMS manufacturers should design to them from the architecture stage.

Q4. What are the core building blocks of a secure BMS?

A hardware root of trust, secure boot, authentication, access control, and protected key storage.

Q5. How is cybersecurity different from functional safety in a BMS?

Functional safety handles unintended failures, while cybersecurity handles deliberate attacks, and in a BMS the two overlap.

Q6. Is BMS security a one-time certification?

No. It continues through manufacturing, service, and OTA updates for as long as the vehicle is on the road.
